County girls’ teams on a roll

Posted
KEWAUNEE COUNTY – All three Kewaunee County girls’ basketball teams are enjoying winning conference campaigns so far this season, but only one will remain unbeaten a week from now.

That’s because Packerland leaders Algoma (6-0, 7-3) and Kewaunee (5-0, 7-1) will meet Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 2 p.m. tip at Fulwiler Fieldhouse in Algoma.

The Storm beat Sevastopol 53-35 Dec. 20 and Algoma took it to winless Sturgeon Bay 62-30 the same night.

Heading into a Dec. 30 makeup game at Wrightstown (after our deadline for this issue), Kewaunee’s only loss came Dec. 7 at Manitowoc Lutheran, the state’s third-ranked Div. 4 girls’ team.

At home against Sevastopol, the Storm’s stingy defense limited the Pioneers to just one three-point basket, holding stars Kayla Ranley (13) and Naomi Rikkola (12) below their season averages.

Sevastopol made 16 of 20 free throws to prevent an even larger deficit.
Jade Kroll led a balanced Storm attack with 14 points.

Breanna Riha added 11 — including two of the team’s five three-pointers — and Gabby Stangel 9.

Kewaunee made 16 of 26 free throws.

At home against the Clippers, the Wolves got 17 from Sierra Slaby, including three triples, while Jadyn Nellis had 15, all on 3s.

Bristol Schmidt added 9 and Therese Gerdmann 8.

A week later, Dec. 27 at Brillion, Algoma lost 45-40. Brooke Mattson scored 11, Slaby and Schmidt each 9 and Gerdmann 8.

Meanwhile, the Luxemburg-Casco girls are in second place in the North Eastern Wisconsin Conference with a 4-1 mark, 4-5 overall, behind undefeated Freedom.

Last Friday, the Spartans fell 53-47 to Menasha. Sienna Blohowiak scored 18 points (one three-pointer), Brianna Bray 13 (two triples) and Maggie DeBaker 9 (all “3s”).

On the boys side, weather forced postponement of the Dec. 19 slate of games.
Algoma will play its first game in two weeks when it hosts co-leader Southern Door Jan. 3.

In non-conference play, the Luxemburg-Casco boys beat Green Bay Southwest 45-34 Dec. 28 to improve to 2-5 overall.

The Spartans are 1-3 in the North Eastern Wisconsin Conference and hosted Seymour Dec. 30.

Kewaunee’s boys were at Brillion Dec. 30.
