Algoma Council approves tax levy, 2025 budget

Posted

ALGOMA – During its December meeting, the Algoma City Council approved the tax levy and 2025 budget.

“The tax levy for the city of Algoma is going to be $2,179,289 — that’s roughly $31,000 higher than it was last year,” said Algoma City Treasurer Jamie Jackson.

A public hearing was held Nov. 19 to take comments from the general public regarding the proposed 2025 budget.

“When we had the budget public meeting, I was estimating $17.40 per thousand. I did send out an email the next day after we got all of the numbers, and we are down to approximately $17.29 per thousand,” Jackson said,
“That equates to how I was talking about a break-even at that last meeting — that if a person’s property assessment went up 31%, their tax bill would remain about the same as it was last year.

“The credits that many of the properties received — the First Dollar credit and the Lottery credit — do go down this year. The grand total is about a $38 drop per property on those credits.

Although the tax levy per thousand is lower for property owners this year, residents may still see a higher tax bill.

“I believe it was $22.80 last year. It sounds like a huge drop, but our values went up so much that some people will still get higher tax bills than they got last year,” Jackson explained.

Outstanding weed control invoices on four properties and outstanding utility bills owed on six properties collectible in 2024 were also added to the tax rolls.
